Keep one bucket for soap and one for rinsing your wash mitt. Rinsing between passes stops grit from being dragged back across the paint — one of the main causes of fine swirl marks.
Dish soap and general-purpose cleaners strip wax and sealant along with the dirt. A pH-neutral car shampoo cleans just as well without leaving the paint bare.
Dragging a rough or dirty cloth across the surface is how most swirl marks actually happen. Blot dry instead of wiping in long strokes.
